Ada County District Court Overview
Idaho's trial courts are District Courts. Ada County is in the Fourth Judicial District, which also serves Boise, Elmore, and Valley counties. District judges handle felony criminal cases after bindover or indictment, civil cases assigned to district court jurisdiction, appeals from the magistrate division, and other matters assigned by Idaho law and court rules. The Magistrate Division is part of the District Court and handles the high-volume matters that many public searchers encounter first.
Magistrate judges hear misdemeanors, traffic infractions, preliminary hearings in felony cases, small claims, landlord-tenant cases, domestic relations, juvenile matters, protection orders, probate, guardianship, and conservatorship. This means Ada County does not have Texas-style county courts at law or justice of the peace courts. District Court vs. Magistrate Division vs. Municipal Processes
Ada County's local court structure is simpler than many states because the Magistrate Division is part of the District Court. A misdemeanor or traffic infraction may be heard by a magistrate judge, but it is still within Idaho's district court system. City processes exist for municipal parking tickets or city administrative penalties, but those are not a separate county trial court for state traffic violations.

How a Case Moves Through the Ada County System
The case path depends on whether the matter is felony, misdemeanor, civil, traffic, probate, family, or municipal parking. Felonies commonly begin with arrest or complaint and preliminary hearing work in the Magistrate Division before moving to District Court for trial and sentencing. Misdemeanors and traffic infractions usually remain in the Magistrate Division. Civil cases may proceed through complaint, answer, motions, hearing, judgment, and possible appeal.

Courthouse Access, Parking, and Remote Hearings
The Ada County Courthouse is at 200 W. Front Street in Boise. The Clerk's court phone is 208-287-6900, fax is 208-287-6919, and court email is adaclerk@ada.idcourts.gov. The courthouse is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mountain Time, except federal holidays. Public parking for the courthouse and Ada County Indigent Services Office is on the east side of the courthouse. Research notes state the first hour is free and each additional hour is $1. Visitors must pass through security screening to enter.
Ada County continues to support electronic hearings. People can attend many hearings by smartphone, laptop, or computer when the court authorizes a remote appearance. Specialty Courts and Local Programs
Ada County has several problem-solving and specialized court paths that can affect criminal dockets. Drug Court was established in February 1999 and uses court supervision, treatment, testing, incentives, and sanctions for eligible defendants. Veterans Treatment Court gives certain criminally involved veterans a treatment and support route in the community. Felony Mental Health Court aims to reduce recidivism among severely and persistently mentally ill offenders and uses a four-phase model with professional support and frequent court appearances. Domestic Violence Court operates in the Magistrate Court and can affect misdemeanor calendars, no-contact orders, and review hearings.
Treatment-court appearances may be visible as court settings, but clinical records, staffing notes, and treatment files are not ordinary public court records. Appeals and Higher Courts
Magistrate Division decisions can be appealed to the District Court under Idaho rules. District Court decisions can proceed into Idaho's appellate system, which includes the Idaho Supreme Court and the Idaho Court of Appeals. The appellate path is separate from ordinary record-copy requests. Federal cases are also separate. Ada County is in the U.S. District Court for the District of Idaho, and federal appeals go to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Federal records are accessed through PACER and federal CM/ECF, not the Ada County Clerk.
Boise and Meridian Traffic or City Prosecution Touchpoints
State traffic violations in Idaho are handled by the Magistrate Division of the District Court. Ada County's traffic and misdemeanor page says iCourt can be used to look up court calendars, case information, and pay fines or citations. Online court payments carry a service fee of $2.00 or 2.4% of the total, whichever is greater, and some cases cannot be paid online if they are in collections, require a mandatory appearance before payment, or are sealed.
Boise parking tickets are a different city process. City of Boise Parking Services says a person wanting to contest a parking ticket may sign up for Traffic Court within 30 days of issue, and the registered owner must bring the ticket, valid driver's license, and vehicle registration to Parking Services in City Hall at 150 N. Capitol Boulevard. Boise City Attorney's Criminal Division prosecutes misdemeanor and infraction offenses within Boise city limits and also provides prosecution services to Meridian by contract.
